Pride of ownership brought high expectations to a downtown San Diego building remodel. With a big picture view, RMD Group answered with a solution that elevated the neighborhood.
A family-owned brick building in downtown San Diego had a run of successful restaurants for more than 20 years. When it was time to modernize, the owners consulted with RMD Group to find its best possible use for the future.
Actively involved in the community, the owners were invested financially and emotionally. They wanted a solution that would enhance the neighborhood and surrounding area. We were asked to revitalize the dated concept and redevelop the building with this goal in mind.
Local flavor
The building in its current state provided little inspiration. It was boxy and nondescript, with just two small windows. To remedy this, the team opened up the entire front of the building to create a welcoming facade with fresh air and sidewalk views.
The design team incorporated local details such as Gaslamp-style lighting and a menu focused on regionally sourced ingredients.
Raising the bar
Not yet satisfied, we made a game-changing addition: a rooftop dining area, the first of its kind in downtown San Diego. The rooftop not only doubled the building’s usable space but with square footage that had a 25% higher earning potential.
“RMD saw potential in our Gaslamp property that no one else had recognized. The results have been spectacular.”

Introducing the first-of-its-kind free-standing building with a rooftop generated the excitement everyone hoped for, but with it came complicated permitting challenges. RMD Group handled these efforts as well and plans were approved.
