Nightclubs open hot but often cool just as quickly. When investors wanted a nightclub with the power to stay current, they called RMD Group.
A group of local businessmen had the desire to open their own nightclub. Their only experience in hospitality came largely through patronage. But as avid supporters of Stingaree (San Diego’s most successful nightclub at that time) and its leadership (including future RMD founders Mike and Rod), they knew RMD Group were the ones who would rise to the opportunity.
At the time, clubs had a short lifespan. Each new opening would steal away the crowds from the previous hot spot. The investors posed a challenge to RMD Group with understandable concern: how do you build a venue that stands the test of time?
Always something new
The RMD Group team is deep with nightclub expertise from all angles of the industry. They understood the churn has little to do with substance. Rarely was the decline due to a new venue offering something the previous was lacking. The crowds chase the next new thing simply for its “newness.” That’s when inspiration hit.
The team got right to work, finding the space, negotiating the lease, and beginning the critical design phase.
Constant change
Soon we opened FLUXX, an 11,000-square-foot club with a circular dance floor and a brilliant twist to sustain its longevity. Multiple times a year, the club would undergo a complete interior redesign.
Every 6-8 months, Our award-winning design team Davis Ink would reimagine the entrance, interior and decor with bold new textures, color and eye-catching features. The name Fluxx was a nod to this concept, a club in constant change.
“Fluxx has been one of the best performing clubs ever. Its popularity with local and national audiences kept it on top for many years. RMD identified a unique concept and it paid off big time for all involved.”
- Investor, Fluxx Nightclub
But did it work?
“The first 10-18 months of a club’s lifespan are traditionally its peak profitability. Then it plateaus and begins to decline. With Fluxx, it continued to grow and grow and grow. And when it plateaued, it held at that position and did not fade. For the entire seven years we were involved.” – Mike G, Partner at RMD
The concept itself generated steady buzz, boosted with each new reopening” Any time a clubgoer wanted to see something new, they could come back to Fluxx.
